Cymraeg Cycling

Snowdonia Green Key is keen to develop and promote a series of cycling corridors and facilities around Northern Snowdonia. For example, the development of new mountain bike routes at Penmachno; complimenting the existing main route in Gwydyr North and proposed route for Gwydyr central. Also completing Lôn Las Ogwen by developing the missing section between Tregarth and Felin Fawr, Ogwen Cottage and Capel Curig and providing the all important link to and from Bethesda. The SGK are also looking into extending the cycle route from Capel Curig to Betws-y-Coed. Cycling in general and the development of the National Cycle Network offers Gwynedd and Conwy the opportunity to benefit from the rapidly growing demand for cycle tourism.

Forest Cycling

Forestry Commission Wales have developed a number of cycle trails on their land. Their new website provides details of where to enjoy forest cycling in North Wales

Off Road Cycling

In Gwynedd, we have over 50.5 kilometres (31½miles) of easy to find, free to use recreational routes for walking and cycling which are called Lonydd Glas

(Recreational Routes). These distinctive paths were established along disused railway lines and now form an extensive network. Situated in the picturesque Gwynedd countryside, this network is set in a region which is unique as regards to its landscape and people, and is a stronghold for the Welsh language

Family Cycling Trails

Many of these off road cycle routes are suitable for families and children of all ages.

Research by the Welsh Tourist Board suggests that cycle tourists spend as much, if not more than motorists. The importance of cycling and walking as an accessible form of exercise cannot be stressed enough. Whilst much emphasis is put upon economic regeneration, community health is equally important. There is current concern about the unhealthy nature of modern life, with our children exercising less, raising worries about their future health. Cardio-vascular disease and other illnesses related to poor diet and less exercise are a particular problem in Wales. Cycling and walking can be introduced as a part of normal everyday life, being a form of exercise accessible to all ages and life styles.
